As Christmas weekend approaches, people are already in the holiday spirit. This weekend, there will be plenty to do in the days leading up to Christmas, some of which are themed around the holiday.

 

Friday, Dec. 22

 

Nacimiento

 

This ballet performance explores pre-Hispanic rituals and the impact colonization had on the Americas, while also examining the stories of several historical characters seminal to the identities of the New World. (Queens Theatre, 14 United Nations Ave. South, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. 8 p.m. Admission: $22 to $42)

 

Bad Trip: A Storytelling Comedy Show

 

Come for a night of laughs and catch comedians Bobbie Elfie, Daniel Perafan, Chris Faga, Sam Wolff and James Donlon as they joke about their own personal and cringe-worthy experiences. (Q.E.D., 27-16 23rd Ave., Astoria. 7 to 9 p.m. Admission: $10)

 

Saturday, Dec. 23

 

Christmas Eve on Sesame Street–45th Anniversary Screening

 

In honor of the 45th anniversary of the classic Sesame Street Christmas film, catch a screening of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street at the Museum of the Moving Image. (Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria. 1 p.m. Admission: $9 to $15.

 

Winter Solstice Ritual

 

Join Summer Minerva and her team of grief tenders and musicians at Daya Yoga Studio to release stuck feelings, express what is in your hearts and bear sacred witness to others during the darkest time of the year. Sunday, Dec. 24

 

Photos with Santa

 

Take your children to meet and get their pictures taken with Santa Claus before he heads out that evening to deliver presents to all the good children around the world. (Queens Center, 90-15 Queens Blvd., Elmhurst. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission: Free)

 

Jingle Jangle 5K

 

Celebrate the holidays and make new friends by taking part in this 5K race. (Garden Laundromat, 108-14 Myrtle Ave., Richmond Hill. 9 to 10:30 a.m. Admission: $15 to $30)

Queens man sentenced to 7 years in prison for 2021 attempted kidnapping in Richmond Hill: DA

A Fresh Meadows man was sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to kidnap a 5-year-old boy in Richmond Hill in July 2021, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced Tuesday.

James McGonagle, 27, of Parsons Boulevard, pleaded guilty in Queens Supreme Court in November to attempted kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child for grabbing the child off a sidewalk before his mother and siblings thwarted the abduction.

Lawmakers secure federal funding to combat flooding in Queens after impact of Hurricane Ida and other storms

U.S. Congresswomen Grace Meng and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, announced on Jan. 7 that President Joe Biden has signed their legislation into law to address severe flooding in Queens.

The measure aims to mitigate future disasters like those caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021, which inundated the borough with record-shattering rainfall.

Last December brought a long-awaited victory for New York City. Our City Council adopted the historic City of Yes housing plan, paving the way for more than 80,000 new homes by 2040 with the promise of affordability. As a longtime resident of Flushing, Queens, I naturally welcomed the news – it’s a much-needed reprieve for New Yorkers as housing costs continue to soar in the midst of an unparalleled housing crisis. But entering 2025 on the heels of this win, we residents at  Murray Hill Cooperative remain at risk — our lives are virtually unchanged because we belong to the last class of unprotected “tenants” as ground lease co-op residents. Without legislative action, more than 25,000 New Yorkers face the threat of losing their homes — homes that we own — to landowners seeking to raise our ground rent to astronomical rates.
