Jan. 24, 2024 By Ethan Marshall

The number of reported rapes and burglaries across Queens both dropped over the last month compared to the same period of time last year, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD Monday.

During the 28-day period from Dec. 25 to Jan. 21, the number of reported rapes went down 20% in northern Queens, from 15 reported cases last year to 12 this year. Over the same period of time, burglaries decreased 12.4% in northern Queens, from 169 to 148.

The 108th Precinct, which oversees Long Island City, Sunnyside and Woodside, experienced the most significant decline in the number of reported rape cases in northern Queens during the 28-day period. Cases there dropped from four last year to one this year.

During the same 28-day period, the 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace, had the largest drop in reported burglaries. These cases fell from 53 the previous year to 38 this year.

The decline in reported rape cases was more pronounced in southern Queens. Cases there dropped 42.9% during the 28-day period, from 14 last year to eight this year. At the same time, burglaries were also down 4.6% in southern Queens, from 87 last year to 83 this year.

In southern Queens, the 103rd Precinct, which covers Hollis Park Gardens, Hollis, Lakewood and Jamaica, experienced the biggest drop in reported rape cases during the 28-day period, from four last year to none this year.

Despite the decreases in rapes and burglaries, throughout the 28-day period, the number of major crimes, which include, murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny of vehicles—ended up increasing in northern Queens and remaining static in southern Queens. Major crimes in northern Queens are up from 1,122 to 1,192, while southern Queens has barely had any change, increasing from 782 to 797.

The slight increases are due in large part to the rise in robberies and grand larceny of automobiles across the borough. Robberies were up 40.5% in northern Queens, from 121 last year to 170 this year. Vehicle thefts increased 10.3% in northern Queens, from 165 to 182.

The 110th Precinct, which covers Corona and Elmhurst, experienced the most significant rise in reported robberies across northern Queens, from 21 to 44.

The 111th Precinct, which oversees Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Auburndale, Hollis Hills and Fresh Meadows, had the biggest increase in vehicle thefts across northern Queens. Cases there went up from 13 last year to 24 this year.

In southern Queens, the 102nd and 103rd Precincts both had big increases in reported robbery cases. The number of cases went up from eight to 13 in the 102nd and from 27 to 32 in the 103rd.

The 105th Precinct, which oversees Bellerose, Cambria Heights, Glen Oaks, Laurelton and Queens Village, had the biggest jump in vehicle thefts across southern Queens. Cases there increased from 14 last year to 34 this year.
