Flushing Playground Officially Opens, Ribbon Cutting Held Monday

June 7, 2018 By Christian Murray

A ribbon cutting was held Monday for the opening of a new playground on a site used by two Flushing schools.

The playground was built at JHS 189Q and the Flushing International School, located at 144-80 Barclay Ave, on space that had previously been used for parking.

The new playground includes an artificial turf field, running track, outdoor classroom as well as trees, bleachers and benches.

The design includes green infrastructure such as paving stones, bioswales, trees and a garden area that will capture 700,000 gallons of storm water per year improving the health of the Flushing Creek.

The project cost $1 million and was funded by the MetLife Foundation, with allocations from Council Member Peter Koo and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz.  MetLife Foundation, also contributed.

The park is open to the public after school hours and on weekends.

“This green playground transforms a vacant lot into a valuable community amenity that will serve both students and residents for generations to come,” Koo said in a statement.
