Flushing Council Member Peter Koo’s bill to suspend alternate side parking on the eve of Lunar New Year, one of the most important holidays celebrated by Asian Americans, has been unanimously approved by the City Council.

The bill was introduced by Koo in February of this year, two years after the celebration became a school holiday.

The bill passed the City Council on Nov. 28, allowing alternate side parking to be suspended throughout all five boroughs leading up to the holiday on Feb. 5 in 2019.

The council member said at the time he introduced the bill that it is meant to provide for an easier commute on the eve of the holiday for the thousands of Asian Americans living in New York City and visiting.

“Lunar New Year is a time for families to come together, often from across the world, to celebrate and spend time with one another,” Koo said in February. “The days leading up to the New Year is a time of a great commuting for people returning home and those visiting relatives.”

He added: “…Easing these regulations will reflect the city’s understanding of this important cultural holiday.”
