Donation of Congressional Papers (Maria Matteo: Media and College Relations

Former U.S. Representative Joseph Crowley donated his congressional papers to Queens College, his alma mater, in a ceremony last week that traced his decades of public service in Queens and the Bronx.
The former New York District 14 Congress member donated the collection of papers and materials at a deed signing event last Thursday at the college’s Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library in Flushing.
The items will be arranged and categorized by archivists, and be made available for research under one of the school’s special collections.
“What a great gift to our students for whom these materials will hopefully serve as inspiration for careers of great distinction,” said Félix V. Matos Rodríguez, Queens College President, in a statement.
Items in the collection include official correspondence, background on legislative issues, strategy and planning documents, speeches, and memorabilia.
Notable material also in the collection include framed copies of the Affordable Care Act with the original signatures of President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (featuring a handwritten note from Pelosi and a pen used in the signing), the Senate Good Friday Agreement signed by Hillary Clinton with a handwritten note from her, and the U.S. and India Nuclear Cooperation Bill with a commemorative pen.
Pictures of Crowley with political figures like President Bill Clinton, Governors Mario Cuomo and George Pataki, and Secretary Hillary Clinton are also part of the trove of documents, along with nods to his time as a New York State Assemblymember.
“Queens College was a bedrock of my education and young life,” Crowley said in a statement. “It is my hope that students, faculty, and the public will benefit from an inside view of how Washington, D.C. works on behalf of all Americans.”
Other collections found at the college’s library include the papers of Congressmembers Benjamin S. Rosenthal and Gary Ackerman, Assembly Speaker Saul Weprin, and former Queens Borough President Helen Marshall.
Crowley, who represented Queens and the Bronx in Congress for 10 terms, was defeated in last year’s Democratic primary by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a political newcomer, in a victory that shook the political spectrum.
