Man Who Killed His Mother and Dumped Her Body in Flushing Meadow Corona Park Pleads Guilty

Lyubov Gorbunova

June 19, 2019 By Shane O’Brien

A Rego Park man has pleaded guilty to manslaughter for the fatal beating of his mother, the Queens District Attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

Roman Gorbunov, 24, of 62nd Drive, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter before Queens Supreme Court judge Ira Margulis and is facing 24 years in prison when he is sentenced on July 9.

According to the charges, Gorbunov became involved in an argument with his mother, Lyubov Gorbunova, 58, on the evening of Sept. 27, 2016. As the argument escalated, he struck his mother around the head multiple times with a blunt instrument, inflicting fatal wounds.

He later attempted to hide his mother’s remains by stuffing her into a body bag and ordering a car service to take him to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, where he dumped the body in a lake. His mother’s remains were found 11 days later.

Gorbunov was arrested Oct. 8, 2016, shortly after the gruesome discovery.

Acting Queens District Attorney John M. Ryan said, “this defendant has admitted to one of the most unthinkable crimes – killing the woman who gave him life.

“This was a heinous act and instead of taking responsibility for his actions, the defendant tried to cover up what he did by getting rid of his mother’s dead body and dumping her in a lake in a nearby park. The defendant will now spend many years behind bars for his actions.”
