The Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce is about to kick off a week-long event celebrating Flushing, where visitors can get discounts to local restaurants and cultural institutions.

The second annual event, dubbed “Passport to Flushing,” will take place at about 20 different local venues starting Friday, June 28 through to July 5.

Visitors can take advantage of discounts by picking up a special coupon booklet, or passport, at a participating venue. To redeem a discount, a visitor must simply present the passport to a venue and have it stamped.

The special “passport” booklet will guide participants to Flushing’s most interesting destinations. Destinations include the Queens Botanical Garden; historical buildings, such as the Queens Historical Society at 143-35 37th Ave.; and several restaurants offering traditional Asian cuisine.

The Chamber has issued extra passports and extended the event’s duration in response to the enormous success of last year’s inaugural event.

Passport holders also have the chance to win a wide range of prizes, including a spa and hotel package. The prizes will be offered to participants who follow @FlushingFantastic on Instagram, post about their experiences, and get the most “likes” using the hashtags #FlushingFantastic #FlushingPassport2019.

Joe DiStefano, a Queens-based food critic who curated the inaugural event last year, said that “Passport to Flushing” attempts to dispel the myth that Flushing is a remote area far removed from New York City.

The event is targeted at residents of Flushing, along with tourists. Organizers hope that it will show Flushing as a global village, offering history and culture.

The Passport to Flushing encompasses a wide range of local cuisines, from Taiwanese tea houses and Chinese dumpling palaces to New England seafood shacks.

President of the Flushing Chamber of Commerce Taehoon Kim said that the week-long event celebrates the culture and diversity of one of the most vibrant and dynamic neighborhoods in the United States.

The Passport is part of the Flushing World Fair Expo, where entrepreneurs and business leaders will participate in workshops and discuss commerce on June 28 and 29. The expo kicks off on Friday at Queens College at 8 a.m.

Op-Ed | Hochul: Action is Imperative on Shoplifting, but Violent Crime is Just Fine

Apr. 29, 2024 By Council Member James F. Gennaro

Negotiations regarding the New York State budget have just concluded a few days ago and a budget has passed after more than two weeks of delays. But while Gov. Kathy Hochul has proclaimed this year’s ‘bold agenda’ aims to make New York ‘safer,’ there hasn’t been so much as a whisper about the safety issue New Yorkers actually care about – New York States’s dangerous bail reform laws and the State’s absence of a ‘dangerousness standard,’ which would allow judges to detain without bail those defendants that pose a present a clear and present danger to our communities. (The 49 other states and the federal government have a dangerousness standard. NY State is the only state that lacks this essential protection from the State’s most dangerous offenders.)

After crackdown on street vendors, CM Moya announces return of multi-agency Roosevelt Avenue Task Force

Council Member Francisco Moya led a walk-through along Roosevelt Avenue in Corona with representatives from nearly a dozen city agencies to point out quality-of-life issues that have affected residents and business owners for too long, including the proliferation of massage parlors, unregulated street vending and uncleanliness.

Following the tour, Moya announced he is re-establishing the Roosevelt Avenue Task Force, a multi-agency effort to tackle pressing concerns that was initially created in 1991 but has faltered in recent years.
