Elected officials and community leaders held a ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday to mark the start of construction of a 795-seat building that is going up at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School.

The ribbon cutting comes months after the School Construction Authority broke ground on the 3-story annex that is about to rise at 57-00 223rd St. school.

Construction began in August and the new building is set to open in September 2022.

The building is expected to alleviate overcrowding at the Bayside school, which is currently at 149 percent capacity, according to the SCA.

“Cardozo is one of several schools built in eastern Queens in the 1960’s that are now bursting at the seams,” said Lorraine Grillo, President and Chief Executive Officer of SCA. “Now is the time to meet the increasing demand for seats as our communities continue to grow and prosper.”

The 3-story annex will be air-conditioned and fully accessible. It will include 25 classrooms – for grades 9 through 12 – along with two special education classrooms.

The annex will also include a teacher’s workroom and supervisory offices on each floor, according to the SCA.

Other features include a new robotics labs, a mock court room, a media center and production room and bicycle storage.

An artist will also be commissioned to create artwork for the lobby of the new building.

The annex was designed by in-house SCA staff. Construction on the building began after a $47.8 million contract for the new building was awarded to Arnell Construction Corp, according to the SCA.
