A volunteer who delivers food to the poor is in critical condition after he was stabbed by a homeless man inside an Elmhurst park Tuesday.

Rick Isbitiram was handing out free meals at Hoffman Park – located between Hoffman Drive and Woodhaven Boulevard – at around 10 p.m. when a homeless man confronted him for not arriving on time to distribute the food, police said.

Isbitiram asked the man if he still wanted a meal. When the homeless man rejected his offer, Isbitiram walked away.

The homeless man became enraged and knocked Isbitiram to the ground before stabbing him with an unknown object in the chest, according to police.

Isbitiram was transported to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he is listed as being in a critical condition, police said.

There have been no arrests.

The suspect is described as black, aged in his 40s with a heavyset build. He was last seen wearing a black hoody with green and red colored pants.
