A Flushing-based pediatrician was indicted on attempted murder and other charges Thursday for allegedly stabbing a pregnant employee at his medical office over the summer.

Jianqiang An, 58, who runs a pediatric clinic in Flushing, allegedly slashed his 30-year-old pregnant employee repeatedly with a knife on June 21 in an attempt to prevent her from leaving his office for the day.

The incident, according to the charges, allegedly took place at around 4 p.m. when An blocked the exit to stop her from leaving. He yelled and waved a paring knife at her and then allegedly held the knife to her neck.

He allegedly cut her neck several times. The woman crawled into the hallway to try to escape, but An followed her out of the office and slashed her several more times as they struggled in the hall, according to the charges.

Other office employees and the woman’s husband pulled An off her and restrained him until police arrived. The pregnant woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of multiple cuts to her neck, arms and hands and for observation of the fetus.

An, who lives in New Hyde Park, Long Island, was indicted by a Queens grand jury and arraigned in Queens Supreme Court Thursday on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

A description of An on Zocdoc describes him as “friendly and active.” He has a 4.64 rating—out of 5—on the site.

“A medical doctor’s oath is to ‘do no harm,'” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. “This defendant is a medical doctor accused of inflicting great harm during a violent attack on his own employee, a pregnant woman he allegedly stabbed and slashed multiple times.”

An is set to return to court on Feb. 28 and faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
