Elderly man dies in early morning Whitestone house fire

An elderly man died in a house fire in Whitestone early Friday morning, according to authorities.

According to FDNY and NYPD sources, the fire broke out in a home at 149-36 18th Ave. in Whitestone around 3 a.m. on Feb. 17.

A total of 12 units consisting of 60 FDNY personnel arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire by 3:57 a.m., according to FDNY

Police say a man in his 70s was removed from the scene after suffering from smoke inhalation and a cardiac episode. He was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His identity is pending family notification.

FDNY fire marshals are working to determine the cause of the fire.

The investigation remains ongoing.

A Flushing man was criminally charged in the fatal stabbing of his wife in front of horrified customers at a Kissena Boulevard spa during the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Jiahai Ma, 25, of Cherry Avenue, was arraigned in Queens Criminal Court on Wednesday evening on a criminal complaint charging him with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon for allegedly killing 26-year-old Jui Mei Tang during a fit of rage in the basement of the Bodywork Spa at 41-39 Kissena Blvd.
