Crunching the Queens crime numbers: large jump in robberies during final month of 2023

The number of robberies spiked across Queens over the final month of 2023 when compared to the same period in 2022, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD on Monday.

During the 28-day period from Dec. 4-31, the number of robberies rose 54.2% in northern Queens, from 118 cases in 2022 to 182 in 2023. The most significant increase was seen in the 110th Precinct, which oversees Corona and Elmhurst. Cases there rose from 18 to 52.

In southern Queens, there was a 23.6% increase in robberies over the same period of time, from 89 in 2022 to 110 in 2023. The 103rd Precinct, which covers Hollis Park Gardens, Hollis, Lakewood and Jamaica, had the largest increase in cases, from 21 to 4.

During the 28-day period, the number of major crimes—which include murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny of vehicles—increased in both northern and southern Queens compared to the same period in 2022. In northern Queens, major crimes went up 4.47%, from 1,187 in 2022 to 1,240 in 2023. Meanwhile, southern Queens experienced a 5.2% increase, from 769 to 809.

For the entire 2023 year, there was an increase in the total number of major crimes across Queens compared to 2022. In northern Queens, the number of major crimes reported increased 5.81%, from 15,692 in 2022 to 16,604 in 2023. Southern Queens experienced a slight uptick, up 0.59% from 10,930 to 10,995.

Robberies were up in northern Queens but were down in southern Queens in 2023 compared to 2022. In northern Queens, robberies were up 10.9%, from 1,870 to 2,074. Robberies in southern Queens dipped 6%, from 1,455 to 1,368.

The number of murders and rapes in Queens dropped in 2023 compared to 2022. In northern Queens, murders went down 18.5%, from 27 in 2022 to 22 in 2023. In southern Queens, murders dropped 49%, from 51 to 26. Rapes decreased in northern Queens by 2.4%, from 207 to 202. In southern Queens, rapes went down 7.4%, from 175 to 162.

Three sought in armed robbery near Flushing Meadows Corona Park: NYPD

Police from the 110th Precinct in Elmhurst are looking for armed robbers who targeted a 26-year-old woman in Corona and remain at large nearly two weeks later.

Police say three strangers approached the woman as she walked near the Playground for All Children in Flushing Meadows Corona Park at Corona Avenue and Saultell Avenue at around 4:20 a.m. on Friday, July 12. One of the perpetrators allegedly pulled out a small silver revolver and threatened the victim, while the others forcibly removed two yellow gold necklaces worth $2,000, according to the police report; however, an NYPD spokesman said it is not clear if that was the value of both chains or each one individually.
