Flushing council member offering free flu shots at district office this month

Oct. 5, 2023 By Rachel Butler

Flushing Council Member Sandra Ung will be hosting a free flu shot event at her district office in Flushing on Saturday Oct. 14.

The event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ung’s Flushing office, located at 135-27 38th Ave., Suite 388.

Ung was joined by representatives from NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital and the NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital Chinese Community Partnership for Health to make the announcement.

“Flu season can be a challenging time for our community, especially those with underlying health conditions and older adults,” Ung said. “Prevention is the key and providing these vaccines can significantly reduce the spread of the flu virus and its associated health risks. We want to ensure that everyone who wants to keep themselves and their loved ones safe has access to a free flu vaccine. I want to thank NewYork-Presbyterian for their support and for their ongoing commitment to creating a healthier and stronger community.”

Chui Man Lai, of NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Chinese Community Partnership, welcomed the initiative and advised people who have received the flu vaccine before to still get a new one this fall, as viruses can change.

“Influenza is a seasonal upper respiratory tract and lung infection that is most common in the fall and winter,” she said. “With the flu and COVID-19 likely to be circulating together this season, getting a flu shot is more important than ever. It is also important to remember that the virus can change from year to year, so people should still get the vaccination even if they received the 2022-2023 vaccine. NewYork-Presbyterian is happy to partner with Council Member Ung’s office to provide this valuable service to the community.”

There are a limited number of 110 vaccines available, so people who are hoping to attend are advised to pre-register by calling Ung’s office at 718-888-8747. All recipients must be 19 years of age and over and must bring valid ID with them.

Priority will be given to those without health insurance. Pregnant women are not eligible.
