Yi (Andy)Chen picked up a significant endorsement in his city council race, exchanging endorsements with mayoral candidate Ray McGuire.

Chen is running for the Democratic nomination in District 25, which encompasses Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. The district is currently represented by the term-limited Daniel Dromm, who has not yet endorsed a candidate to be his replacement.

“Elmhurst and Jackson Heights deserve leaders that will prioritize the issues of imminent concern including relief for small businesses, public safety and the educational opportunities for our youngest residents,” said McGuire, a former vice chairman at investment banking giant Citigroup.

“I look forward to partnering with Andy when we are both elected.”

Chen, who goes by the name Andy, returned the favor, calling McGuire “the best candidate for the job” in a joint statement.

“The McGuire Comeback Plan is what our city needs to recover post-pandemic in a way that will give opportunity to ALL New Yorkers, not just a select few,” said Chen, who was born in China and worked as New York State Assembly Assistant Speaker Felix Ortiz’s Asian community liaison director.

The two candidates had campaigned together in Elmhurst earlier this month. Both are leading their respective races in private funds raised, according to the latest campaign finance disclosure reports on March 15.

McGuire has been endorsed by a number of Queens-based politicians, including NY State Senator Leroy Comrie and New York State Assembly member Vivian E. Cook.
