Flushing will bring in the Year of the Rat in its annual Lunar New Year parade later this month.
Thousands of spectators are expected to both watch and march in the parade, which begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. at Union Street and 37th Avenue.
The parade stretches to Main Street, with hundreds of thousands from around the city and beyond partaking in the festivities, which include dragon dances, traditional music and dance, martial arts demonstrations, and floats highlighting the variety of Asian-American groups in the Flushing area.
Before the parade, residents can join the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce at St. George’s Church, located at 13532 38th Avenue, for coffee and refreshments, raffles, prizes and live performances by local artists at a 9:30 a.m. reception.
Following the reception, marchers will make their way to the parade’s starting point to join the celebration.
The parade is organized by the Flushing Chinese Business Association, the Korean American Association of Queens and the Greater Flushing Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s zodiac animal, the rat, is associated with wealth, cleverness and likability, according to Chinese tradition.
