New Yorkers plan to show their support and gratitude tonight for essential staff and health care workers who have been in the front line in the battle against COVID-19.

People across the city are being asked to collectively clap for two-minutes at 7 p.m either outside their homes, at their balconies or at their windows.

The hashtag #ClapBecauseWeCare is being used online to garner support and help spread the idea.

The concept is to show support and gratitude to the workers who are putting their own lives at risk while trying to help COVID-19 patients or keeping critical services in operation.

Thousands of people across the U.K. and Europe have already performed the feat and New Yorkers are attempting to repeat the uplifting gesture on this side of the Atlantic.
