NYPD: Suspect Steals Car, Sets it on Fire in Whitestone

Police are searching for a man who allegedly stole a car and set it on fire on March 24 in Whitestone.

The white 2003 Chevy Suburban was nabbed after the 51-year-old male owner left it running near 14-70 Utopia Parkway at around 6:45 a.m. 

The suspect spotted the unattended vehicle and drove it a short distance, police say. He then set it on fire and took off running down the street.

The suspect is described as a white male in his twenties. He was last seen wearing sunglasses, a dark jacket and jeans.

The amount of reported grand larcenies across Queens dropped a significant amount across both northern and southern Queens during the 28-day period from Sept. 30 to Oct. 27, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats. Another notable trend over this period of time was vehicle thefts dropping sharply in northern Queens but increasing a large amount in southern Queens.
